I love this Fiilex light kit. I had occasion to get it for a shoot overseas in Paris since I needed a something compact and portable but with lots of flexibility. It’s super lightweight and I love how it is organized in the case. You dial in the color temperature and it comes with a softbox. The best thing, they emit no heat whatsoever. One little design hitch is the cable to the power supply is short from the unit head, so that weight can hang pulling on the head. To remedy this you’re obliged to dress the cable over a knob on the stand. Read more

Short films made with a single video camera app
George shot on his trusty iPhone 6S+ 4K 100 Mbps. The RL48 LED ringlight was mounted on the Beastgrip Pro via a Beastgrip cold shoe mount. A Filmakr custom preset was created for this series of films. The 4K to 1080p preset included a Music Bed, Intro / Outro titles and Intro Bumper. After he shot the interview, he then he recorded all the slow motion b-roll footage. He edited by slicing the interview clips and removing unwanted sound bites. After rearranging the sound bites to tell the story, he used Filmakr’s drag-and-drop b-roll to illustrate the interview.

This is my Mojo on Mojo series continued… : ) This whole video about Beastgrip was shot, edited and shared on the same device using one piece of software, Filmkar, for a complete 360 mobile production. Play it back on YouTube at 1440 to see quality. Doing this has confirmed for me that 4K is very useful not so much for posting in 4K, but when the bitrate gets knocked down from 100 or 50 mbps to around 25 mbps, the footage compresses incredibly well. Short history of anamorphic lenses
Anamorphic lenses were introduced for filmmaking in the 1950’s to create an immersive, panoramic experience intended to compete with the widespread adoption of television. In addition to a wide aspect ratio, the anamorphic aesthetic is characterized by horizontal flares, distortion that creates a unique sense of depth or dimensionality, and oval “bokeh” or blur for out-of-focus areas. For these artistic reasons, anamorphic filmmaking has been enjoying a decades-long renaissance. However, due to the complexity and expense of the optics involved, anamorphic lenses are not readily available to most independent filmmakers. Moondog Labs believes there are stories best told with an anamorphic aesthetic, so they developed an affordable 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter beginning specifically for the iPhone 5/5S and continuing to through all new iPhones up to the current iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
How does the Moondog Labs 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter work?
The built-in iPhone camera captures a 16:9 aspect ratio in video mode, like this:

Shooting with the 1.33x Anamorphic Adapter optically “squeezes” a 33% wider scene onto the sensor, creating a raw image that looks like this (note the wider view, but thinner looking objects):

The Moondog Labs Anamorphic Adapter beautifully exhibits the wide aspect ratio and the classic horizontal purple flares and distortion that are characteristic of vintage anamorphic lenses. Unfortunately, the short focal length lenses used in mobile phone cameras lack the shallow depth of field needed to create significant bokeh in most situations, including the oval bokeh traditionally associated with anamorphic lenses.

Early in her career as an optical engineer at Kodak, Julie developed digital and mobile phone cameras, projection systems, digital cinematography cameras, and a wide array of printing, defense and medical equipment; she holds four U.S. patents. She moved into management roles in the optics division and led Kodak’s corporate engineering division, including engineering, image science, strategic alliances, venture capital, and project management teams supporting worldwide research and product development.
