Looks like the Thai translation (localization) of the app is paying off. Thai tech reviewer Bakky Ummata gave us a nice write up on his site Nua Nia. Here’s a translation for the English-speaking among us.
Filmakr Review: All in One Video filming app. Take video like a pro!
If you want an all-inclusive app, Filmakr is your best choice.
A few weeks ago I was contacted by someone from overseas because he liked my Beastgrip Pro review. I was really surprised but after a few talks with him, I found out he was from the Filmakr app development team. And this team is also friends with Beastgrip Pro. They wanted me to test their Filmakr app, and I think this app is cool, so I’m going to introduce it to all of you.
Filmakr is a universal app meaning it can be used both on iPhone and iPad with a single purchase. Normally, you would have to pay $9.99 or around 360 Baht. But now they have a great deal for only $3.99 or 140 Baht.
But wait! The initial Filmakr purchase only gives you access to the camera tool. If you want to enable editing functions such as trimming clips, adjusting sound pitch or export your edited audio to the camera roll, you would need to pay and additional $4.99. But for this review, I tried the Premium for Business package. For more details of other packages, please visit Filmakr site.
Even though Filmakr looks quite simple at first, once you open this app, you will see many features and menu settings. Let me tell you that in terms of manual camera apps for iOS, there are many available. But for video filming apps, manual video cameras are rare, which is also true even for android with few available.
Filmakr has a variety of functions ranging from EV (exposure value) adjustment which you can set to Auto or adjust manually. Also, if you are familiar with them, there are Custom ISO function and Shutter Speed adjustment. You can also lock the White Balance and choose a level for your Grid. What I like the most about this app is focus adjustment.
Normally, adjusting focus between 2 objects is something that isn’t so easy for a beginner. But with Filmakr, you can set up to 3 positions to focus on. And during filming, you just tap each position to reposition the focus. This really helps you to film more professionally.
You can also switch between full screen and Editor modes where you can put many clips together. Moreover, you can trim your clips or apply filters or reposition them. Another cool function is that you can enable background music and adjust sound fading.
At the beginning, I was a bit confused using this app since there are so many features. But they are not very difficult to use and it didn’t take me very long to get used to the app. Besides the features mentioned above, there are many others such as different motion effects like Normal, Slow Motion, Fast Motion, Strobe Motion or Aspect Ratios such as 16:9, 2.20:1, 2.39:1, 1:1 as well as many filters. You can also preset the functions and sync with Dropbox.
If you like a trigger control function for your record button, there’s also this mode provided. When you use this mode, you can press and hold the button to film your clip and when you release, the app will stop filming. This function is similar to Instagram. And for flash, you can also adjust the level of flash brightness.
Even though on iOS there are many great video editing apps such as iMovie, Pinnacle or Replay, those apps only function as an Editor which doesn’t meet the requirements of users who want to do everything instantly. And Filmakr works like a live preview app and it can edit your clips right away without having to export them to another program. I can tell you if you want an all-inclusive app, Filmakr is your best choice. As there are lots of details about this app, I’m not able to review everything. So I suggest you to visit the official website of Filmakr.
